FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What are vinyl lettering and graphics?
Basically a sticker.  They are individually cut, self-adhesive stickers that can be applied to most any smooth non-porous surface.  My indoor vinyls are matte finish and don't reflect light which gives them a professional look. For my indoor and outdoor "boards" I use an outdoor vinyl that is shiny and very sticky that adheres well to the wood. The lettering and graphics we sell are individually cut and should not be confused with lettering and graphics that are printed on a thin, transparent (but usually glossy) self-adhesive sheet. There will "not" be any transparent sheets left on purchased vinyls from me.

How do you install the designs?
Installation is easy and no previous experience is necessary.  The directions are in the same area as you found these questions (on the right side of the webpage under important links.

What surfaces can I apply the designs to?
Our lettering is self-adhesive and will stick for years to most any smooth or semi-smooth surface . This includes glass, metal, plastic, smooth stone, and latex painted surfaces. Vinyl lettering doesn't stick well to porous or semi-porous materials that are untreated such as brick, cinderblock, paper, and wood.  If these kinds of surfaces have been treated with a sealer or latex paint (or anything else that closes the pores) vinyl generally works well on them. Vinyl does not work on textured walls.

Can I reuse the designs?
No, it's a one-time use.  When you remove the lettering  they get stretched out in the  process.  While it may be possible to reposition a small letter or graphic, replacing it precisely with it's neighbors will be tricky.

Can the designs be used in rooms with high humidity like bathrooms?
Yes, vinyl lettering and graphics do fine in a humid environment.  The key to their longevity is that they are properly installed so that the adhesive forms a solid bond with the surface to which it's applied (which is what needs to be done in any room). When applying vinyl the surface needs to be dust and grease free and completely dry. I have a vinyl quote in my own bathroom that has been bringing me joy for over 4 years now :-)

Can I use the designs outdoors?
Yes and I use outdoor vinyl for that purpose. However my indoor vinyl is what is called an intermediate grade vinyl and is designed for indoor use.  But... I have been testing the indoor vinyl on my own car for 3 years and it still looks like new. So I'm saying it will probably last as long as you have the car!  But never use outdoor vinyl indoors because it "will" peel the paint off as it has a much stronger adhesive on it.

Can the designs be applied to tile?
Yes, as long as the tile is not overly textured.

How long do I need to wait after painting before I apply vinyl lettering?
We recommend that you wait 3 weeks after painting before applying vinyl lettering.  Even when paint is reasonably dry to the touch, there is still moisture in it.  Vinyl will not stick well to paint that has not fully cured.  The curing time may be somewhat shorter in drier climates, but no matter where you are we recommend a minimum of 2 weeks curing time.

Can vinyl lettering be cleaned?
Yes,  by gently rubbing with a rag dampened with warm water and mild detergent. Sorry...no excuse for not doing the spring cleaning :-)

What size graphic can I order?
All the colours can be ordered around 22 inches tall.  But in black and chocolate, they can be 28 inches tall.  When a written quote is larger in height than the height of my vinyl rolls, I simply make them in two pieces.

How do you remove the designs?
Removing vinyl lettering is simple.  I suggest you warm it up with a blow dryer and then just use your fingernail to get under the edge of a letter and then peel up. You can use an exacto blade or tweezers to get an edge up if you can't get underneath it with your fingernail. The letters peel off just like a sticker. Usually each letter will come off as a single, intact piece (although they aren't reusable because they typically stretch upon removal).  If there is any adhesive residue left behind after removal you can remove it by gently wiping with a cloth and rubbing alcohol.
